Subscription box controversy alert!

Boxycharm announced their first ever Limited Edition box in November. At a cost of $44.95 this box was to have 8 items with a total value of over $200.

Initially this box was supposed to be released to subscribers first with the left overs offered to the general public. Through snafu or through design, they were released to the general public first which really pissed off some of the hardcore subscribers.

I was pretty meh about the whole thing. It’s a box. Would I pay $45 again for it? Although I do like some of the products, no.

Tarte Be your own tarteist eye & cheek palette – $38 ($19 on sale) I love Tarte packaging and the shadows are of average quality, lightly pigmented. Nothing special and now discontinued.

Ofra Advanced Vitamin C Cream – $50 WTF Ofra? Do yourself a favor and just get The Ordinary’s Vitamin C for $6.

Becca First Light Priming Filter Face Primer mini – $18 I like this. It dries down nicely and doesn’t have that super slippery silicone feel to it. It’s very light weight and fragrance free. I might purchase a replacement is I find it on sale.

Sigma E35 Tapered Blending Brush – $17 Sigma brushes are always pretty nice. They are heavy and wash up really well. Minimal shedding, nice blending. They are also often on sale for 50% off so $17 is a stretch.

PUR Big Look Lengthening Mascara – $21 This is a super thin formula. I have to wipe off the applicator before use which, I’m sure, is adding some sort of bacteria into the tube. I have very little transfer and flaking though. Again, often on sale for half off.

Makeup Geek Full Spectrum Eyeliner Espresso – $9 Reasonably priced and fairly creamy.

Bareminerals Gen Nude Buttercream Gloss Popular – $18

CoverFX Custom Enhancer Drops Halo (missing in picture! Oops) – $42 Just the wrong color and type of product for me. Would be great on paler skin and someone younger (at heart).

  1. I am so iffy on these subscription type things. On the one hand it would give me a chance to try new products and brands but on the other hand if I wanna throw down $45 a month guaranteed on makeup and skincare I’d like to have total say on what I end up getting! Lol also maybe it’s just where I am in my life (debt up to my eyeballs) but I can’t justify that price tag. Sorry it seems your experience wasn’t the best one could hope for.

    1. @froberry the normal subscription price for Boxycharm is 21$ a month and you get 5 full size items. The value is always 100$ and up-all 5 items aren’t usually knock your socks off-but there’s always a few that are amazing. Like last month the tarte tarteist lash paint mascara was great, value of 23$ so more than paid for the box. Ipsy is another great sub and it’s 10$ a month. You should try one!! It’s very worth it, and it’s nice to look forward to every month 😉

  2. I was one of the people that was mildly annoyed that I didn’t even get the chance or option to buy the box-but once I saw what was in it, I didn’t feel that bad, and probably would’ve been disappointed if I got it. The only thing I would have been excited about is the Becca primer-I hear it’s great. I have CoverFX drops already, don’t need more-and the OFRA million dollar hand cream was a definite wtf moment. Do you feel it didn’t live up to the hype? I feel like BC mishandled the entire thing from the get-go. I expected way better for a holiday limited edition box from them, I guess. Not that the brands aren’t great brands-but we’ve already seen these brands in regular boxes. Im not pooping in your box, I swear, I don’t want it to come across like that 😬

    1. ☺️ The Ofra cream is nothing special, maybe I just haven’t used it long enough but $50 is insane. The Ordinary’s is phenomenal especially for the price and Ole Henriksen had a great one that goes on sale often. I am loving the Becca primer, it might be my new Holy Grail.

I totally agree with you though, this box was a dud for the cost. I wish I would’ve missed out on it too 🤣🤣

      1. I just expected a lot more from a limited edition Boxycharm. For example? Maybe some Fenty, some Hourglass, some Huda? OFRA has some amazing liquid lips but we’ve seen OFRA already, we’ve seen Tarte, so none of that wowed me. I would have liked to see something original, you know? The value was great, as BC always is, but for all the hype sort of meh. I’m pretty jelly over the Becca primer though 😲 enjoy!!!
